A Perfect Nature & Wildlife Day in Kyoto

Kyoto is famous for temples and tea houses — but if you want nature, culture, and a little wild adventure in one day, Arashiyama is unbeatable.

This guide shows you how to combine:

  • The iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
  • The playful monkeys of Iwatayama Monkey Park

They’re walking distance from each other, making this one of the best half-day itineraries in Kyoto for first-time visitors.

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Japan’s most photographed natural spots — and yes, it really looks like the pictures.

A 500-meter pathway is surrounded by towering bamboo stalks reaching up to 30 meters high. When the wind moves through the leaves, the sound creates a calming, almost surreal atmosphere.

What to Expect

  • Free entry
  • Open 24 hours (best in daylight)
  • Paved main path (wheelchair friendly)
  • Can get crowded mid-day

Best Time to Visit

Before 9:00 AM or near sunset.
Between 10 AM – 3 PM it becomes extremely busy with tour groups.

Nearby Highlight

Right next to the grove is Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its garden connects directly to the bamboo forest and is absolutely worth the small entry fee.

⏱ Suggested time: 45–60 minutes

🐒 Iwatayama Monkey Park

After the forest, cross the famous Togetsukyo Bridge and head uphill to Iwatayama Monkey Park.

Here you’ll find over 120 wild Japanese macaques roaming freely on the mountainside.

This is not a zoo.
The monkeys live naturally in the mountain environment.

Important Details

  • Entrance: ¥600 (adults)
  • 20–30 minute uphill hike (moderately steep)
  • No touching monkeys
  • No direct eye contact (can be seen as aggressive)
  • Feed them only inside the feeding hut (¥100 snacks)

Why It’s Special

  • Free-roaming monkeys
  • Incredible panoramic views of Kyoto
  • Seasonal beauty (cherry blossoms in spring, colorful leaves in autumn)

From the top, you get one of the best views over Kyoto city — a fantastic photo spot.

⏱ Suggested time: 1.5–2 hours including the hike
